Vivien Casagrande
Vivien Casagrande is a professor in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.〔http://www.vanderbilt.edu/psychological_sciences/bio/vivien-casagrande〕 She is the daughter of renowned civil engineer Arthur Casagrande.
==Life==
She received her PhD from Duke University in 1973 in Physiological Psychology under the direction of Dr. I. T. Diamond. In addition to being a professor, Casagrande is also a Senior Fellow and Investigator for the John F. Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development.
Casagrande has been awarded the Charles Judson Herrick Award(1981) from the American Association of Anatomists and was elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science(2006).〔http://www.psy.vanderbilt.edu/faculty/Casagrande/CasagrandeLab/CV.pdf〕 She has also been on the editorial board for J. Comparative Neurology and Visual Neuroscience.
Her research focuses on understanding how the visual thalamus and cortex interact to construct our perceptual world. She does this through different projects. Her first project analyzes the notion that the primary sensor information received by the visual cortex from the visual thalamus is not purely visual, but rather visual information. The second project tests are done to determine if all thalamic nuclei contain some cell groups that act as drivers and some that act as modulators for multiple cortical areas. The third project concentrates on communication between cells in separate areas of the visual cortex and studies how visual messages are coded and transmitted from lower to higher visual areas and what the role of feedback is.〔http://www.vanderbilt.edu/psychological_sciences/bio/vivien-casagrande〕
